Déterminisme du recrutement. Séminaire de Nantes, 2-4 juillet 1984 ArchiMer
Ifremer.
The causality of recruitment is of paramount importance for the progress of the control of marine living resources, but its study remains technically complax. The aim of the Nantes panel was to evaluate the state of advancement of three running programs on exploited species (sole, scallops and oysters), and to set out the basis of a wider national program of interest for both basic and targeted research.

A revision of Choleva agilis (Illiger, 1798) and related species (Coleoptera: Staphylinoidea: Cholevidae) Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M..
The Choleva agilis-group is revised. The three species are redescribed and their zoogeography is discussed. The phylogeny of the three species is hypothesized. Choleva jailensis Jeannel, 1923 and C. agilis clermonti van der Wiel, 1931 are new synonyms of C. agilis (Illiger, 1798). C. lederiana var. brevicollis Krogerus, 1926, is a new synonym of C. lederiana Reitter, 1901. The cavernicolous taxon gracilenta Szymczakowski, 1957, formerly regarded as a subspecies of C. lederiana, is transferred to C. septentrionis Jeannel, 1923.

A revision of the polytypic Albinaria hippolyti (Boettger, 1878) from Crete (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Clausiliidae) Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M.; Welter-Schultes, F.W.; Wiese, V..
On the basis of both detailed distributional field studies and morphological analyses, a revision of the polytypic species Albinaria hippolyti from Central and Eastern Crete is presented. True subspecies are distinguished from mere geographic varieties by the presence of narrow hybrid zones. Using this criterion, four adjoining subspecies are recognised: A. h. hippolyti (Boettger, 1878), A. h. aphrodite (Boettger, 1883), A. h. holtzi (Sturany, 1904) and A. h. harmonia subspec. nov. Additionally, two geographically isolated and conchologically distinctive forms are also treated as subspecies: A. h. arthuriana (Boettger, 1878) and A. h. asterousea subspec. nov. The geographical distribution and variability of each subspecies is described in detail. A. h....

Daily rainfall variability at a local scale (1,000 ha), in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, and its implications on soil water recharge Scientia Agricola
Reichardt,K.; Angelocci,L.R.; Bacchi,O.O.S.; Pilotto,J.E..
Daily rainfall variability at a local scale (1,000 ha) was studied at Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, for the period of one year (1993-1994), in order to better understand the process of soil water recharge. Coefficients of variation of daily data for ten observation points varied from 2.2 to 169.3% and the variability was independent of rain type, i.e. whether convective, frontal or of other origin. Data were not related to separation distances between observation points and it is concluded that one observation point does not represent areas as far as 1,000 to 2,500 m apart, for daily, monthly or even quarterly averages. Yearly totals for the ten observation points presented a coefficient of variation as low as 3.06%, indicating that all points can replace each...

Environmental Design and Analysis in Marine Environmental Sampling OceanDocs
Underwood, A.J..
The IOC-IMO-UNEP/GIPME Groups of Experts on Effects of Pollution (GEEP) has been working for a number of years on promoting new ways of understanding how pollutants affect marine biological systems. A major initial focus of GEEP was on calibration workshops where different methods were tested against one another. The Oslo (1986), Bermuda (1988) and Bremerhaven (1992) workshop publications are widely regarded as benchmarks demonstrating that biological effects methods are reliable tools for measurement of the effects of pollutants discharged to the marine environment. IOC through GEEP, in cooperation with UNEP, has published a series of manuals based on the successful techniques and these are listed at the back of this volume. Monitoring programmes for...

Effects of Site-Specific Management on the Application of Agricultural Inputs AgEcon
Hennessy, David A.; Babcock, Bruce A.; Fiez, Timothy E..
Site-specific management of inputs in agricultural production is receiving increasing attention because of new technologies and concerns about excessive input use. This paper provides a microeconomic analysis of its implications. It shows that profit decreases with an increase in the variability of input requirements, but that the input and production effects can be quite complicated. The effects of moving from uncertainty about input requirements to variable requirements are also identified. An empirical study of nitrogen fertilization suggests that sitespecific management may reduce input use substantially, but the production and profitability impacts may not be large.

Sampling strategies for tropical forest nutrient cycling studies: a case study in São Paulo, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Sparovek,G.; Camargo,O. A..
The precise sampling of soil, biological or micro climatic attributes in tropical forests, which are characterized by a high diversity of species and complex spatial variability, is a difficult task. We found few basic studies to guide sampling procedures. The objective of this study was to define a sampling strategy and data analysis for some parameters frequently used in nutrient cycling studies, i. e., litter amount, total nutrient amounts in litter and its composition (Ca, Mg, Κ, Ν and P), and soil attributes at three depths (organic matter, Ρ content, cation exchange capacity and base saturation). A natural remnant forest in the West of São Paulo State (Brazil) was selected as study area and samples were collected in July, 1989. The total...

Early selection of elite plants in Asparagus Bragantia
COINTRY,ENRIQUE LUIS; LÓPEZ ANIDO,FERNANDO SEBASTIÁN; GATTI,ILEANA; CRAVERO,VANINA PAMELA; FIRPO,INÉS TERESA; GARCÍA,STELLA MARIS.
In order to establish an efficient selection criterion the variability in three asparagus populations was evaluated defining the most important yield components and analysing its evolution along three growing seasons. The yield components, coefficient of variation (CV) and the proportion of plants contributing to 80% of the total yield were estimated. The elite plants were selected by mean of total yield and clusters techniques. Multiple regression showed that spear number (SN) and spear weight (SW) were the most important yield components. In every population, total yield (TY) and SN showed the highest values of CV, independently of sex. 69% of the plants contributed to the 80% of the total yield in the first year while in the second and third year the...

Typology of individual growth in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Gardeur, J; Lemarie, Gilles; Coves, Denis; Boujard, Thierry.
The individual growth variability of passive integrated transponder tagged sea bass was studied using data sets from two different experiments. In experiment 1 (n = 485), fish submitted to different photoperiod regimes were held in fourteen groups of individual weight of 88 ± 13 g (mean ± SD). In experiment 2 (n = 748, initial weight 243 ± 30 g) fish were held in fifteen groups and had either free or restricted access to diets with three lipid levels. After adjustment for treatment and tank effects, individual growth curves were analysed using multivariate analysis (principal component analysis and clustering) and were modelled using the summary statistics technique. Different growth profiles where characterized. All of them appeared to be curvilinear....
